A brilliantly colored Western Tanager striking a pose.
Of the few species of Tanagers found in the United States, this is my favorite. Colored like flames of a fire, this attractive bird can be found foraging carefully among the trees, seeking insects, seeds, and fruit.
Surprisingly, other members of this diverse Thraupidae family are even more colorful, beautifully displaying all the colors of the rainbow. Most species are native to the tropical and mountainous landscapes of Central and South America and attract the attention of curious birders from around the globe.
